The election of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, as the Chairman of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI) at the 258th meeting of the Conference of Leaders is in line with the recommendation of the Federal Supreme Committee for Islamic Affairs.
In a statement today, Custodian of the Seal of Leaders Syed Danial Syed Ahmad said the committee, then chaired by the late Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid, believed that since Islam is under the jurisdiction and discretion of the Malaysian rulers, it was more appropriate for the council to be chaired by a head of state.
