JOHOR BARU: Petai is among the local products to be showcased at Malaysia Expo Fest 2022 to be held in Singapore, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Industries Datuk Seri Ahmad Hamzah said.
He said around 700 food, fruit and handicraft products from 80 Malaysian companies will be showcased at the festival at the Singapore Expo from August 25-28.
“We conducted market research to find out what Malaysian consumers in Singapore are looking for during the four-day festival, so we know what to bring there, and petai is one of them.
“Singaporeans want local products that are loved in every state.
“We’ve found that consumers there like to buy a product that they know the origin of, or ‘product origin’, before making a purchase,” he added.
Ahmad said this after dispatching trucks carrying the produce in Singapore to the operations center of the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) in Johor yesterday.
He also said that following the investigation, Malaysia would send some 3,000 packets of petai to the festival, and if there was overwhelming demand, it would send more.
Ahmad added that apart from petai, other festival items include keropok lekor, sugarcane juice, Sarawak layer cake, rendang paste, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables.
He said he expected to see a good response from Singaporeans at the expo, which will be held for the fifth time.
“After the postponement of this festival for two years due to Covid-19, we expect to see 90,000 visitors to the show.
“The last time the festival was held in 2019, it had RM7.3 million in sales. This time we are aiming for a sales value of RM7 million, with an export value of RM15 million,” he said.
