The assault on Penang Executive Councilor Jagdeep Singh Deo in a restaurant parking lot in Tanjung Bungah last Friday night was neither revenge nor politically motivated, said State Police Chief Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain .
He said initial investigations revealed the incident happened following a misunderstanding between the suspect and the DAP lawmaker.
“So far, police investigations have revealed that the incident was neither politically motivated nor revenge-motivated, as the 60-year-old suspect, a foreign national, did not even know who the victim was.
“We think they had a misunderstanding and the incident happened too quickly,” he told a press conference in George Town today.
Yesterday it was reported that police arrested and remanded the suspect to aid investigations into the incident, which resulted in an ankle injury to the chairman of the state and local government housing committee.
Shuhaily said the investigative document was submitted to the deputy attorney general for further action.
In a separate development, Shuhaily said police were looking for four other men suspected of being members of an organized crime group known as the Chandra Gang, which had been active in drug trafficking.
He said the four men included two locals, K. Harivin Raj, 25, and B. Jagandran, 47; while the other two were foreigners known only as Juanda and Afrizal.
“A total of 14 members were detained in connection with Op Cantas Tanjung 3 on May 25 and were charged in court under the Security Crimes and Special Measures Act 2012,” a- he declared.
Police believe the gang is involved in drug trafficking and gun possession and has been active for the past year. – Bernama, June 20, 2022.
