Langkawi recognized as one of the best islands in Southeast Asia

Malaysia’s Langkawi has just added another feather to his proverbial hat. This time the archipelago is recognized as one of the best islands for rest and relaxation in Southeast Asia. By Najihah Rashid

With a group of 99 islands, Langkawi is also known as the “Jewel of Kedah”. Before the pandemic, the archipelago attracted nearly 4 million vacationers from all over the world. This year, as the country recovers from the onslaught of the pandemic and travel returns to normal, the island aims to welcome 8,90,000 visitors by the end of 2022.

Hoping to attract more international tourists and potentially boost the local economy, Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) CEO Nasaruddin Abdul Muttalib employs a four-point strategy. “To achieve this wish, we are focusing on four main components, namely leisure tourism (both international and domestic), meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) and tourism events,” says -he.

The agency’s efforts are proving successful. This world-class destination won the Asia Best Awards 2022 for being one of the best islands in Southeast Asia. Ranked fifth on a list of tropical gems, Langkawi shares this prestigious status with Phuket, Koh Samui and Bali.

“Our action plan includes promoting a concept of green tourism, creating experiences and responsibility, providing incentives such as duty-free shopping as well as creating attractive places for Instagram to ensure that we maintain our position as one of the best islands in Southeast Asia,” continues the CEO.

Alongside Langkawi, Penang also made the table, securing an eighth place finish.
