KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 – Although many Kuala Lumpur residents have started returning to their hometowns for the upcoming Aidilfitri celebrations, there are those who are still in the capital and have chosen to go shopping at the last minute.

Checks carried out by Bernama at several malls known to be popular shopping spots for Hari Raya revealed that they were packed with shoppers tonight and crowds are expected to rise further after the fast is broken.

Amy Ariffin, 25-year-old assistant manager of the Bath and Body Works store in SOGO, said the relentless flow of shoppers throughout the month of Ramadan had brought a festive air to the mall.

“Here, customers love to make last-minute purchases. Especially along Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman (TAR) as there are a lot of last minute promotions.

“Every Hari Raya we will have promotions for lotions, body mists and other products. They buy a lot of Raya gifts,” she told Bernama Today.

Muhd Nasrat Mahir, 17, a worker at a baju melayu shop in the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) building, agreed with Amy, sharing that customers usually start pouring in after 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.

“Every day there are many customers, not just last-minute shoppers in Raya, but before that there were also many people,” he said.

Meanwhile, at Jalan TAR night market, customer Auni Saffiah, 18, said she took the opportunity to shop Hari Raya at malls now, three days before returning home to Kelantan, and hoped it would get lower prices.

“Alhamdulillah’s preparations for Raya this time are more festive than two years ago and today I am with my family and spending time shopping for Raya essentials like tudung, shoes and other items .

“So far, many stores are offering low prices with enticing promotions and discounts of almost 50%,” she added.

Jalan TAR night market baju kurung trader Kamarudin Husin, 55, said he started having promotions and discounts today.

“Since I started selling here at the start of Ramadan, customer response has been very encouraging and now that Raya is only three days away, we have several attractive promotions to boost sales.

“I really expect more customers to show up at the last minute because they want to take advantage of the promotions and discounts offered by merchants at the end of this month,” he told Bernama. — Bernama
