Barcelona will display the logo of the UN refugee agency on their shirts

Barcelona will promote the UN refugee agency’s logo on the back of their shirts for the next four seasons in a partnership announced on Tuesday.

The agreement comes after UNHCR recently said an unprecedented 100 million people had been forced to flee conflict, violence, human rights abuses and persecution, driven by war in Ukraine and other deadly conflicts.

Barcelona ceded the sponsorship space on their shirts to UNHCR rather than selling to a commercial entity despite the club having debts of 1.3 billion euros ($1.3 billion).

“I’m sure our fans, our members – the owners of the club – are more than happy with this global alliance with UNHCR because we showed the world our hearts,” Barcelona president Joan Laporta said. “We showed the world our soul.”

The Barcelona men haven’t won any trophies in two of the last three seasons.

“We want Barcelona to be a successful club and we want Barcelona to be financially sound, that’s obvious,” UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said alongside Laporta during a press conference. “It’s not at odds with having a social conscience.”

The Barcelona foundation will share 400,000 euros per season with UNHCR projects in Colombia, Malaysia, Turkey and Uganda. Barcelona will also donate the equivalent of 100,000 euros per year in sports equipment and sports knowledge.

While the UNHCR logo will be on the back of Barcelona shirts from next season, the front will feature the branding of audio streaming platform Spotify.
